Football history

First and foremost – this is especially for the uninitiated – American football is NOT rugby football. It can be conceded, however, that American football as we know it today has strong roots in rugby football (that is, the game of rugby had spawned American football). American football history, simply put, began with rugby football which in itself was a game that was commonly played in Britain in the mid-nineteenth century. The game just evolved out of rugby thanks to the changes in rules put in by many different people, although it was Walter camp who DEFINED American football by introducing rules like the distance, the downs and the line of scrimmage. The game continued to develop with rules added and taken away through the turn of the century, from the nineteenth to the twentieth centuries.

According to football history, much of the adjustments for the game were determined by college coaches. Eventually, this collegiate game grew to become more and more popular, with much thanks to the intense rivalries, until the entire nation have become engrossed by this particular sport. This is why up until now, collegiate football is one of the most important American pastimes. The turning point in football history however, came with the establishment of the National Football League (then known as the American Professional Football Association). From there, the collegiate entertainment has reached a whole new high.
